Cambridge Rugby Club win both Town versus Gown fixtures against Cambridge University RUFC

Town triumphed over Gown twice during the first meeting of the two institutions this season on Sunday afternoon.

With the facilities at Cambridge University Rugby Club currently undergoing renovation work, both the women’s and men’s encounters were played at Ellgia Fields, home of Cambridge Rugby Club.

And it was the hosts that made their advantage count with a victory in both fixtures.

In the women’s match, despite the students taking an early lead, it was the rugby club came out on top 20-12.

Alexandra Perez Pion was among the tries for Cambridge, while Sophie Liddiard and Kate Willis were named the Forward and Back of the Match respectively.

And it was an even bigger margin of victory in the men’s match as Cambridge 1923s registered a 41-14 win over those that will be hoping to secure themselves a spot in the squad for the Varsity Match next February.

Early tries from Harry Bellamy and Jack Doorey-Palmer put the 1923s in command before Imi Qorowale’s 34th-minute try sent them into the break 15-7 in the ascendancy.

Sam Johnson’s try – converted by Jack Vernum – stretched the 1923s’ lead further, but the students hit back via Ben Cook.

However, their hopes of a comeback were extinguished late on via tries from Caleb Reeves and Jasper Sorrell, which were converted by Vernum and Will Howes respectively.

Joe Green was involved in both of those tries and he also played a leading role in the final action of the match that saw Jonah Varela dot down.

Meanwhile, Cambridge RUFC women’s squad will next be in action on 22 October when they take on Loughborough III.
