Cambridge United 0-1 Rotherham United: Barry Corr reflects on a ‘real kick in the teeth’ after visiting Millers claim all three League One points in stoppage time
Cambridge United assistant head coach Barry Corr has described tonight’s 1-0 defeat to Rotherham United as a ‘real kick in the teeth’.
The U’s went into this evening’s clash at the Cledara Abbey Stadium still searching for a first win this season and looking to end a sequence of 16 matches without a victory stretching back to last term.
And while all three points looked to be beyond them, it did appear that they had at least ground out a point until the second minute of stoppage time when substitute Sam Nombe turned the ball in from close range.
For Cambridge the wait for a much needed victory goes on, whereas Rotherham were afforded the luxury of being able to celebrate a first away win since 8 November 2022 – halting a run of 693 days.
Corr, who was doing the post-match media duties after head coach Garry Monk was red carded by referee Darren Drysdale following the final whistle, said: “I think we deserved (something from the game) and that was a real kick in the teeth at the end.
“It was a real gritty performance and probably the conditions had something to do with the way the game looked.
“We showed loads of fight, loads of character and it wasn’t a game full of chances but we had the better ones with Dan Nlundulu in the second half.
“It’s football and that’s a bit of a killer at the end – it’s not what we deserved.”
Yet while they ultimately have nothing to show for their effort and endeavour, Corr has challenged the players to replicate that level of commitment going forward.
“They’re down because they know they put in a really committed performance,” he added.
“They’re not daft, they know what the game looked like and they’re upset they didn’t come away with something.
“We have to have that fight and that type of commitment every game as a minimum.”
Bottom-of-the-table United, who are seven points adrift of safety, travel to face Exeter City on Saturday (5 October).
