Cambridge United complete signing of former Crystal Palace winger Sullay Kaikai after MK Dons departure
Mark Bonner has started the bolstering of his attacking options at Cambridge United with the signing of Sullay Kaikai.
Speaking after the weekend’s 2-1 pre-season friendly victory over Ipswich Town, Bonner revealed that he was hoping to add at least two wide players to his squad before the new Sky Bet League One season gets under way on Saturday, August 5.
And within 48 hours the U’s have announced the arrival of Kaikai, who has signed a one-year deal at the Abbey Stadium following his release by MK Dons at the end of the previous campaign.
Kaikai, who has also been on trial with Championship outfit Rotherham United this summer, previously had a loan stint with Cambridge during the 2014/15 season, during which he scored six goals in 30 appearances.
“It feels good. I am excited to be back and it’s a great opportunity for me. I did well the first time I was here so I want to replicate that and have a strong season,” said the former Crystal Palace winger after becoming United’s fifth signing of the off-season.
“The way the manager wants to play will suit me down to a tee, having that freedom in the final third, so I am really looking forward to it.”
Bonner added: “I am delighted to be welcoming Sullay back with us and believe his athleticism, attacking qualities and attitude make him a brilliant addition. He manipulates the ball well in tight spaces, dribbles at pace and will create and score goals.
“Sullay will be familiar to some supporters from his loan spell with us previously and joins us fit and ready to go, having played games in recent weeks. Last season saw him continue to add to his tally of League One games and we are signing a player with good experience at this level and an excellent temperament.”
After starting in the Premier League with Palace, Kaikai had permanent spells with NAC Breda, Blackpool and Wycombe Wanderers before he joined MK Dons in January.
