Cambridge United boss Neil Harris plotting ‘big rebuild’ in transfer market ahead of 2025/26 League Two season

Neil Harris has outlined his plans for a ‘big rebuild’ of his Cambridge United squad over the summer.

With United’s relegation to League Two having been confirmed and a number of players set to be out of contract, the expectation for some time has been that Harris will look to make wholesale alterations prior to the 2025/26 campaign getting under way.

And Harris has now confirmed that intention, with ‘every position on the pitch’ under scrutiny.

He said: “If you look at the players that are under contract, there’s not lots. And there’s a couple of players that have obviously carried injuries throughout the season like Zeno Rossi and Glenn McConnell – if they’re not going to be in the starting XI then they need to go and play somewhere.

“So straightaway you’re looking a big rebuild over the summer, and obviously that’s part of the excitement that hopefully people can buy in to.

“Fans love to see some of their own players, and they love to see fan favourites, but they also love to see new players as well and there will certainly be an opportunity for that over the course of pre-season. There will be a lot of new players.

“Areas of the pitch? Pretty much all of them to be honest. We’ve got to look at the goalkeepers because of the amount of goalkeepers we’ve turned over this season. We’ve got decisions to make on goalkeepers over the next 72 hours.

“Top end of the pitch, we’ve not scored enough goals this year. Have we created enough chances? In a lot of games we have so we’ve got to make sure we find that clinical nature. Is that levels? Is that because League One defenders have been too good for us? Possibly, but we need to look at the top end of the pitch and find more creativity and goals.

“Certainly from the wide areas we’ve got to find some creativity. We need more assists and chances created (from the wide area).

“And in the middle of the park we’ve got players out of contract, players that have been injured for a long time like Gary Gardner and Korey Smith has not featured since I’ve been in the building or since January. And it’s the same with Jordan (Cousins). He had a good run but now he’s injured. We’ve got to look at the middle of the pitch for options as well.

“Pretty much I’m covering every position on the pitch.”

Cambridge are expected to announce their retained list at some stage next week.
