Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk nominated for League One monthly manager prize alongside Mansfield Town’s Nigel Clough, Reading boss Ruben Selles and Matt Bloomfield of Wycombe Wanderers

Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk has been shortlisted for the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month award for October.

The U’s started the month with back-to-back 1-0 defeats at the hands of Exeter City and Rotherham United – results that ensured Monk’s men had collected just one point from their first nine league outings this term.

However, the subsequent international break afforded Monk extra time on the training pitch with his players and it paid dividends.

Upon their return to action on 19 October, United chalked up their first victory since 1 April when they recorded a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the Cledara Abbey Stadium.

And that was followed three days later with a triumph by the same scoreline at Stevenage before a 1-0 home win at the expense of Burton Albion moved Cambridge up to 21st and just one point from safety ahead of last weekend’s FA Cup win at Woking.

Monk has been nominated for the accolade alongside Matt Bloomfield, who guided his Wycombe Wanderers side to 13 points from a possible 15 to move into the top two.

Ten points out of 15 has also seen Mansfield Town boss Nigel Clough included alongside Reading chief Ruben Selles. The Royals chalked up four wins from six matches in October.

The winner of the prize is due to be announced on Friday (8 October).
