Cambridge United discussing whether or not to recall Liam Bennett from Walsall loan spell

Cambridge United are set to make a decision on the future of Liam Bennett over the coming weeks.

The U’s have the option to recall the young full-back from his loan spell at Sky Bet League Two outfit Walsall in January.

The 21-year-old, who had made 10 appearances for United last term, has caught the eye for the lower-league Saddlers during his 23 outings in all competitions.

And United head coach Mark Bonner has revealed that discussions are taking place as to whether or not Bennett will remain in the west Midlands until the end of the campaign or return next month to add competition for places at the Abbey Stadium.

“It’s definitely something to consider – we have those discussions all the time,” he said.

“The loan is going outstandingly well for him and the trade off is how many games is his season going to look like? At the moment he’s in Walsall’s team and he’s doing brilliantly, it’s a great loan for him.

“We’ve got that option so we discuss that one all the time and we’ll see what the best case is in terms of our team but also Liam’s development as well.

“There’s an option there to do that but we’ll see how things play out in the next few weeks and then make a call once we get into January.”

Speaking last month after Bennett missed Walsall's FA Cup against Wycombe Wanderers due to United not wanting him to be cup tied, manager Michael Flynn said: “Liam is on loan and Cambridge were still in the cup so that’s why he didn’t play.

“Liam has been great for us, he just wants to play football and I’m glad I’ve been able to give him the chance to do that.

“He has grabbed it with both hands and could have been a real miss at Wycombe but it was out of our hands. What will happen in January with Liam, we will have to wait and see.”
