Cambridge United full-back Liam Bennett making big impression during Walsall loan spell

Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner has been delighted by the progress Liam Bennett is making during his loan spell with Walsall.

The 20-year-old, who signed his first professional contract with the U’s in 2021, has caught the eye during his 17 appearances for the Sky Bet League Two Saddlers this term.

He also underlined his potential as an attack-minded full-back last weekend by scoring in Walsall’s 2-1 defeat at Mansfield.

Bonner said: “It’s (gone) exactly how we hoped it would. We hoped he’d get to Christmas and have played 20-odd games and he’s got himself in the team and scored last week.

“Ben Strang (sporting director) has watched him, Dom Knighton (academy manager) has watched him and we’ve watched a lot of video stuff.

“He’s enjoying it and (is) doing really well and getting a run in the team, which is perfect for him at this stage in his development. To be playing that many games at that level is really good for him.

“We’re really pleased with how it’s going and look forward to monitoring his progress over the next few months.”

Bennett joined Walsall on a season-long agreement in the summer, but there is a clause in the deal that allows United to recall him in January.

Asked if that is something he would consider, Bonner replied: “January is a long way off. We’ll deal with that one in January.

“At the minute he’s doing everything he needs to do, which is focusing on being a good player for Walsall.

“For us that is exactly what we want him to do. When January comes around we’ll have a plan for that but we’ll deal with that one when it comes.”
