Cambridge United look to put on a show against Queens Park Rangers in FA Women's National League Division One South East fixture at Cledara Abbey Stadium
There will be more than just three points at stake when Cambridge United run out against Queens Park Rangers at the Cledara Abbey Stadium on Sunday (12 October) afternoon.
For boss Sean Greygoose, he is eager to see the U’s continue their positive start to the new FA Women's National League Division One South East season with what would be a fifth victory from six outings.
However, with his side getting the opportunity to play at the home of the men’s team, he is also aware that there is a bigger picture at play.
He said: “The club are brilliant with us. We don’t have lots of money but they look after us in the right way.
“The result is obviously really important, but we also want to make sure that all of the young girls and boys that come to watch with their families are engaged and enjoy what they’re watching.
“The (Cambridge United) Foundation is putting a lot of hard work in to make it a family day, the club’s two mascots will be there and so hopefully all of that – combined with a good on-pitch performance – will encourage people to come back and watch us again.
“The men’s team are getting really good crowds even though they were relegated last season and we’d love some of those to come and watch us regularly each weekend as well.”
This weekend’s visitors will arrive at CB5 two places and three points adrift of United.
And Greygoose is anticipating that the R’s will provide his side with one of their sternest tests so far this term.
“It’s going to be a really good game and a tough one for us,” he added.
“QPR are among the favourites in our league and it’s probably our trickiest game since playing Fulham on the first day.
“No disrespect to the other sides we’ve played but those were probably games where we were expected to get a result and we’ve managed to do that.
“This is a different challenge and if we can get a good result and put on a performance for the fans, it will set us up nicely for what’s to come.”
Cambridge go into the clash having ran out 4-1 winners at lower-level Athletico London in the Women’s FA Cup last weekend.
Jade Bell (2), Alysha Stojko-Down and an own goal secured a safe passage through for Greygoose’s team, who have been drawn to face the University of Nottingham in the first round proper later this month.
“It was a chance for us to get some minutes into players that needed them,” said Greygoose.
“You never know when it comes to games like this and they scored a lot of goals in the previous round, so it’s one where we could have easily slipped up.
“But we started well and while we switched off for their goal, it was a good afternoon and we managed to give some rest to some of our key players.”
