Cambridge United bring in Bristol Rovers right-back James Gibbons on loan until the end of the season
James Gibbons has become Cambridge United’s second signing of the January transfer window.
The right-back has joined up with Neil Harris’ squad on loan for the remainder of the season from fellow Sky Bet League One outfit Bristol Rovers.
The 25-year-old spent six seasons with Port Vale – earning promotion from League Two along the way – before switching to Rovers in the summer of 2022. He went on to make 34 appearances across all competitions during the previous campaign, including featuring in both of Rovers’ 2-1 victories over United.
However, this season he has found starting opportunities much harder to come by. Gibbons has appeared for just 190 minutes in the league after falling down the pecking order behind Jack Hunt and Luke Thomas.
Upon completing the formalities of his move to United, Gibbons said: “I can’t wait to get going now. It’s been in the pipeline for a couple of weeks now so I am just glad to get it over the line.
“He’s a gaffer that I want to play for and work for. He has talked me through his plans, what he expects from me and it’s all positive things.
“It’s been a tough year for me but hopefully here I can hit the ground running and get playing.”
Harris added: “I am really delighted to bring James into the club. We have wanted to do four players during the window, with one being an experienced and versatile full-back option, and James certainly ticks that box.
“He has been on our radar for a few weeks now, so we are delighted to bring in his experience and quality – not just on the pitch – where he has been a very good player at this level, but also off the pitch as well.
“He is a good leader, a good pro and has great character references on him. We look forward to working with him over the coming months.”
Gibbons will wear the number 26 shirt for the United and subject to EFL approval, he will be available for Saturday’s trip to Shrewsbury Town.
He is the second new face to sign for United this winter following the addition of experienced forward Lyle Taylor.
