Cambridge United concede stoppage-time equaliser during trip to Haywards Heath Town
Cambridge United had to settle for a 2-2 draw after they were pegged back in stoppage time during Sunday’s trip to Haywards Heath Town.
It appeared that the U’s were heading for all three points when they scored in the 88th minute to take a 2-1 lead in west Sussex.
However, in the third minute of time added on the hosts rescued themselves a share of the spoils.
Visiting United took the lead in the 14th minute when Isabella Simmons showed good pace to get away from the Heath defence and then guided the ball inside the far post from a narrow angle.
Darren Marjoram’s side held on to the lead until midway through the second half.
The equaliser came a from a set piece that United were unable to clear and Mae Goulden was on hand to force the ball in.
Cambridge regained their one-goal advantage with just two minutes of normal time remaining through Alysha Stojko-Down, who applied the finishing touch from close range after some good work from Zoe Wood on the wing.
But three points turned into just one in the dying embers when Amelia Halawi’s effort from outside the box looped over United goalkeeper Lauren Webb and into the net.
The result has left United, who are now without a victory from their last four outings in all competitions, sitting sixth in the FA Women's National League Division One South East standings.
They will return to action on Sunday (January 14) with a home encounter against second-placed Norwich City.
