Cambridge United sign former Ipswich Town, Queens Park Rangers and Charlton Athletic striker Macauley Bonne on loan from Gillingham
Cambridge United’s attacking ranks have been bolstered by the arrival of Macauley Bonne.
The 28-year-old forward has arrived at the Cledara Abbey Stadium on loan until the end of the season from Sky Bet League Two side Gillingham.
The switch sees Bonne reunited with U’s head coach Neil Harris, who signed the striker last summer when he was Gills boss.
After starting his career with Colchester United, Bonne made a name for himself at Leyton Orient, for whom he scored 49 goals in all competitions.
Spells with Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers in Championship followed alongside a loan stint with his hometown club Ipswich Town before he joined Gillingham in the summer.
Bonne, who has scored five goals this term, said of linking up with Harris once again: “He is a manager I have wanted to work with over the years.
“Now the chance is here for me to work under him again it’s an opportunity I want to pursue. He knows me, he knows my style of play and knows how to get the best out of me. It’s an exciting opportunity for me.
“I am fit and ready. I am in a good place right now to go and play football and this has come at a good time for me. There is a good group of lads and I feel like I will be a good fit.”
Harris added: “I am delighted to welcome Macauley to the club. He comes in with a pedigree of playing and scoring at whichever league he has played in. He offers versatility and variety to our front-line, he has played football this year and is fit and ready to go.
“I think he will compliment Lyle and Elias very, very well and I am really pleased he is now with us.”
Bonne is United’s third addition of the January transfer window after the signings of Lyle Taylor and James Gibbons.
