Cambridge United sign former Wigan Athletic, Doncaster Rovers, Coventry City and Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Marko Marosi following Plymouth Argyle departure

Marko Marosi has become Cambridge United’s first signing of the January transfer window.

The goalkeeper, who has agreed a deal until the end of the season, has arrived at the Cledara Abbey Stadium following a short period in the Championship with Plymouth Argyle.

Having started his career in non-league football with Barnoldswick Town, the 31-year-old was picked up by Wigan Athletic before going on to have spells between the posts for Doncaster Rovers and Coventry City. During his stint with the Sky Blues, Marosi was part of a squad that secured promotion to the second tier of English football, as well as being included in the PFA Team of the Year for 2019/20.

The former Slovakia youth international went on to join Shrewsbury Town in 2021 and he made a total of 148 appearances for the Shrews before linking up with Argyle on a short-term deal in the summer.

And following the expiration of those terms at Home Park, Marosi has now agreed a switch to Garry Monk’s side.

“I am really happy to join,” he said. “It’s new beginnings now for me and I am excited to be here.

“I have been there (battling relegation) before, it’s not nice to be in this position but it’s up to the team to come together and climb out (of the position).

“Physically and mentally, I am good to go and itching to get going.”

Head coach Monk added: “I am very pleased to add Marko to our ranks. He brings quality and plenty of experience at this level and will improve us by adding fantastic competition to our goalkeeping department.”

Marosi, who will wear the number 27 shirt, will provide competition for Jack Stevens following the recent departure of Vicente Reyes back to his parent club Norwich CIty.
