Cambridge United working to seal a loan move for youngster Glenn McConnell

Cambridge United are looking to sanction a loan move for Glenn McConnell.

The young attacker signed a new three-year deal with the U’s during the summer but a combination of injuries and competition for places has limited him to just one appearance in the EFL Trophy this season.

And with the 19-year-old unlikely to force his way into the senior set-up at this present moment in time, head coach Garry Monk is keen for him to gain experience elsewhere.

Monk said: “The plan for Glenn is we’re trying to arrange a loan. What he needs to do is go out and play regular games. Being a bit-part player here is not going to help him out in his development at all.

“He’s come off the back of the injuries last season and didn’t really play much football. Then he had pre-season and has not played much football up to this point – and he picked up another injury in recent weeks.

“Now he’s back fit and been training for two or three weeks – what he needs is games. He needs experience and stuff like that so we’re trying to arrange a loan.

“My job is of course to look after where we are, but also be mindful of the development of the young players.

“He’s in a position where he’s not quite ready to contribute to what we’re doing right now, so what he needs is games at a level where he’s competing week in and week, getting fitter and getting his match sharpness. It’s been a long time since he had a run of games or played serious football.”

McConnell, who joined Cambridge as an under-9, had a loan spell with National League South side St Albans in 2023, during which he scored five goals in 20 appearances.
