Striker nets to give U's win over Colchester United

Uche Ikpeazu fired Cambridge United to a well-deserved 1-0 win over Colchester United in Sky Bet League Two today (September 2).

It was a bit of a tepid affair in the early exchanges, almost as if the two sides were sizing each other up.

Colchester had the first sight of goal, with Kyel Reid played through in the area but U’s keeper David Forde doing well to get off his line quickly to make the save.

Jevani Brown had a couple of chances for United, with one going high and wide from inside the area and the other being held by Sam Walker.

Sean Murray had an effort from distance for Colchester in the 27th minute which took a wicked deflection off Greg Taylor to leave Forde stranded, but it went wide for a corner.

United had a couple of good chances towards the end of the half, with Medy Elito’s flicked header from Leon Legge’s nod on held by Walker, and Ade Azeez heading wide with a similar opportunity.

It was a different story in the second half as United took the game by the scruff of the neck.

They enjoyed the majority of both territory or possession, with Ikpeazu testing Walker from the edge of the box after good work by Brown in the 61st minute.

It only took another three minutes before the deadlock was broken.

Substitute Jabo Ibehre strode forward purposefully and played a pass into the Ikpeazu, who cut back inside and then fired a shot from inside the area that arrowed into the keeper’s bottom right-hand corner.

Brown almost doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, taking a pass from Ikpeazu and then jinking back inside before hitting a curling shot which Walker saved acrobatically to his left.

There was a scare for United in the 77th minute when Mikael Mandron found himself with space just outside the six-yard box, but his tame right-footed effort went wide.
