Cambridge United and Cambridge City to lock horns in Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup Women's Cup final after convincing semi-final victories
Cambridge United and Cambridge City will do battle in the Cambridgeshire Invitation Women’s Cup final after their respective victories on Sunday.
The two rivals made relatively light work of their semi-final opponents, with United recording a 6-0 victory over lower-league Newmarket Town at St Neots Football Club’s Rowley Park venue.
Francesca Partridge made the early breakthrough for Darren Marjoram’s side with a goal in the sixth minute and she went on to double the advantage seven minutes later from the penalty spot.
Two further goals from Sarah Wiltshire put United well in command going into the break before Sydnie Naylor made it 5-0 approaching the hour mark. The scoring was then completed in the 83rd minute as Wiltshire wrapped up her hat-trick.
United will be back in action on Sunday (January 22) when they travel to face Actonians in the FA Women’s National League Division One South East.
It has also been confirmed that United will play three further games at the Abbey Stadium this season.
The rearranged league derby with neighbours City will be held at the ground on Wednesday, February 22, followed by the visits of London Seaward and Actonians on Sunday, April 2 and Sunday, April 30 respectively.
Tickets for all three games cost just £5 for adults, while under-18s and season ticket holders go free of charge. Children and season ticket holders can turn up on the day with their proof of status for free entry.
Meanwhile, holders City booked their place in the final courtesy of 5-1 win at the expense of Fulbourn Institute Bluebirds.
City, who defeated Newmarket to lift the trophy last season, took control of the encounter following braces from Ellie Cullum and Becca Stephenson alongside a goal scored by Rose Sparrow.
The date for the final, which is a repeat of the 2019 showpiece, is yet to be confirmed.
City are without a league encounter this weekend after their home match with bottom-of-the-table Hounslow was postponed.
Instead, they are due to return to action on Sunday, January 29 when they hit the road to face Ashford Town (Middlesex).
Elsewhere, Cambridge City’s Under-23s progressed to the semi-final of the Cambridgeshire Women’s Junior Invitation Cup following a 3-2 win over Waterbeach. Haile Richards (2) and Sophie Billing accounted for City’s goals.
