Cambridge United’s January transfer business could ‘go to the wire’
Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner is keen to add ‘two or three more players’ to his squad – but he has warned that deals could ‘go to the wire’.
Clubs in England have until 11pm on Tuesday, January 31 to get their transfer business concluded, with the squads that they have that point having to see them through until the end of the campaign.
The U’s signed defenders Ryan Bennett and Steve Seddon during the first week of the window, but there has so far been no further incomings.
But while Bonner remains confident that fresh faces will still arrive, he was unable to commit to when it will happen.
Speaking after the 5-1 loss at Shrewsbury Town this afternoon, Bonner said: “We’ve got around 10 days to get it done. We’ll probably go to the wire on a couple, I’m not sure it will all be done for Lincoln (away next Saturday).
“The way things work out, it’s never as easy as you think. By the time you think you’ve got a player and then all of sudden he’s gone somewhere else or something happens that stops them signing.
“Hopefully next week we can add, we want to be able to do that, and if we can we will. Maybe one next week and probably one or two the week after that if we can’t get them done next week.
“We’re probably looking at two or three more players if we can throughout the side to give us what we need because I think these players need a lift. Everybody needs to see some fresh faces and some fresh energy in the team.
“We’ve got to add to give us a little kick and little boost towards where we need to be.”
On Thursday Bonner refused to rule out a move for former U’s defender Michael Morrison and speculation has grown surrounding a potential return to the Abbey Stadium after he was left out of the Portsmouth squad for this afternoon’s 2-0 win over Exeter City.
