Wes Hoolahan has called Cambridge United's promotion to League One “brilliant, a great achievement”.

The U's earned second place in Sky Bet League Two, confirming their position on the final day of the season with a 3-0 win over Grimsby Town at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday.

Hoolahan has been an influential part of the U's success, scoring seven goals and contributing nine assists, and he grabbed the second goal against the Mariners to give them some breathing space after Liam O'Neil had broken the deadlock. Top scorer Paul Mullin completed the win late on.

“It's absolutely amazing. It’s a great feeling to get over the line,” said Hoolahan. “The last two weeks we’ve had a tough few of games, but we’ve managed to do it today.

“You can see by the celebrations, everybody is going crazy.

“We meant to do this, win it on the last game at home so it was all in the planning, not to worry about anything else!

“It’s brilliant, a great achievement from the players, all the staff and everybody involved with Cambridge.

“It’s massive. People didn’t give us a chance at the start of the season to achieve promotion, but I think we’ve proved a lot of people wrong.

“It was a core of players, a great team ethic. Working with them in pre-season, seeing how they train, I had a feeling we had a chance of getting promotion, maybe not top three but definitely in the top seven.

“It’s massive, a great achievement from everyone.”

He added: “It's definitely up there with the best of them because the next one is the best one, especially at my age.

“To get promotion at my age is a massive achievement, and just to do it like this is brilliant.

“It's worked out really well. The manager, Bonz, has managed me really well, looked after me with days off and games to play in, so I'm absolutely buzzing.”
