Cambridge City Hockey Club celebrate title wins and promotion for women’s teams

League titles and promotions were secured as the curtain came down on another season for Cambridge City Hockey Club’s senior teams at the weekend.

A 4-0 win over Cambridge University III ensured that Cambridge City IV were crowned East Women’s League Division 2 North West champions.

University goalkeeper Alice Beardmore was on top form, but her resistance was eventually broken by Amber Smith (2), Becky Hayward and Holly Sheahan.

The subsequent promotion means that City IV will be one of just five fourth teams playing Division 1 hockey across the entire country next season.

Also upwardly mobile are Cambridge City VI after a 2-0 win at Cambridge Nomads rubber-stamped their position as East Women’s League Division 4 North West runners-up.

Lizzie Kilsby and Abi Richardson were both on target for City VI, who in securing promotion also recorded their highest ever finish in the East Hockey League structure.

Cambridge City II and Cambridge City III also signed off on positive notes in the East Women’s League Premier Division.

City II finished in second place following their 5-0 home win over Norwich City, which came about courtesy of goals from Rachel Burns (2), Emma Owens, Catriona MacIver and Kara Kilbourn.

Meanwhile, City III ended the season in sixth place after they won 3-2 on the road at Broxbourne.

Anita Nichols and Chanre Bond were both on target but the goal of the match belonged to Hannah Farrant, who weaved her way beyond six Broxbourne defenders before firing into the far corner.

However, there was no final-day drama for Cambridge City in the Vitality Women’s Conference Midlands. They needed to win to stand any chance of winning the title, but a 0-0 draw at Doncaster ended their faint hopes and saw them finish in third place – four points adrift of champions Repton.
