Young aces have a smashing time at South Cambs School Sports Partnership tennis festival

Young aces were given the chance to develop a love for tennis as part of a series of festivals run by the South Cambs School Sports Partnership.

In partnership with Game Set Tennis and head coach Toby Jackson, who runs the coaching programmes at Cambourne and Cottenham Tennis Clubs, more than 200 children were given the opportunity to experience the sport.

The events were hosted at Cambourne, Cottenham and Melbourn Sports Centre for groups of Year 3 and 4 pupils from 21 different schools as part of the LTA Youth Schools Programme which aims to get those aged between four and 18 involved in the game.

There were a range of activities across a rotational basis which included the coconut shy, target tennis, bounce about and fast forehands, all assisted by sport leaders from Cottenham, Cambourne and Melbourn Village Colleges.

South Cambs SSP manager Claire McDonnell, organiser of the events, said: “The focus was very much on providing a fun and enjoyable event for the children whilst helping them to develop their physical skills.

“Just as importantly, if not more importantly, boosting their confidence and providing them with a really positive experience. I think from the feedback we got from the teachers and children we managed to do just that.”
