Cambridge United loan out young attacker Glenn McConnell to National League South side Chelmsford City
Cambridge United youngster Glenn McConnell has sealed a loan move away from the club.
Last week U’s head coach Garry Monk revealed that the club was working to finalise a temporary switch for the 19-year-old, who has made just one appearance in the EFL Trophy this term.
And now the attacking midfielder has joined Chelmsford City on an initial 28-day agreement.
It is a second stint in the National League South for McConnell, who scored five goals from 20 appearances for St Albans City during the 2022/23 season.
Former Cambridge forward and current Chelmsford manager Robbie Simpson said: “I’ve been a big admirer of Glenn for a while, going back a few years really to when we brought (former Cambridge youngster) Kai Yearn in on loan.
“Glenn was another in Kai Yearn’s team who we really liked and that we wanted to get to the football club but he actually ended up going to St Albans and having a great run in their team when they reached the play-off final a few years back, getting lots of goals and assists.
“Since going back to Cambridge he has managed to force his way into the first team there over the last season and he is certainly a player that they have high hopes for, giving him a new deal in the summer.
“Unfortunately he then picked up an injury and he’s come back from that now and has been fit for a few weeks and he has wanted to come out and get games.
“As soon as we heard that Glenn was available he was someone we showed interest in greatly and we’re really pleased that Cambridge and Glenn have chosen to come to us.
“We are really looking forward to seeing Glenn in a Clarets shirt and hopefully he has the same impact as he did for St Albans.”
McConnell made his Chelmsford debut as a second-half substitute during Saturday’s 1-1 draw away at Worthing.
Chelmsford, who are 16th in the National League South, will be back in action tomorrow night against Billericay Town in the Essex Senior Cup.
