The 4th annual photography department lecture will be delivered by Jane, whose work is regularly published in The Sunday Times magazine and The Telegraph magazine.

It was during her first trip to Arizona in 1988 that Jane discovered her obsession for America and its culture. The contradictions in its society and the American dream is a recurring theme in Jane’s work.

Her series ‘Forever Starts Now’ focused on the Las Vegas wedding culture, while her next project, ‘The Brothel’ resulted in a 10-part documentary series for the BBC.

Her 2010 book Dead Eagle Trail saw Jane explore Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas, New Mexico and Wyoming to capture America’s 21st century cowboys. She revisited the brothels of Nevada for ‘Precious’ before heading west to California for her latest project ‘LA Gun Club’, which was released earlier this year.

Jane said: “My work is about the extraordinary realities of ordinary people’s everyday lives, revealing their individual characteristics and ways of being that one so often overlooks.”

Head of Photography Kerstin Hacker, who will lead a Q&A as part of the event, said: “Jane will be introducing her photography and film work to us. She will talk about how she sets up her shoots and her keen interest in American culture.

“Jane photographs in a distinct style and highlights a side of the US that is often less visible. I expect her talk will be of interest to a wide audience, not just photographers.

“Before the talk Jane has kindly offered to spend the afternoon with our third year photography students, to discuss their work and their ideas for next year’s degree show.”

The free lecture begins at 6.30pm and is open to the public. To register, visit eventbrite.co.uk/e/jane-hilton-annual-photography-department-lecture-tickets-29373372548.
