40th anniversary of Cambridge Mayor’s Day Out is celebrated

The mayor, Cllr Dinah Pounds, and John Woodhouse, who devised the Mayor’s Day Out 40 years ago, got together to mark the anniversary of the outing.

A cake cut to mark the occasion is now being donated to a charity housing scheme.

The Genoese sponge cake, with a decoration that included a mayoral chain, was baked by hand by Liz Fenton from the council’s cultural services team, which organises the annual trip to the seaside for residents over 55.

This summer’s trip is on Wednesday, 13 August, and the destination is Great Yarmouth.

James Page, cultural services communications and marketing manager at Cambridge City Council, said: “This is a milestone year for Mayor’s Day Out; 40 years of memorable seaside trips and wonderful memories.

“For many people it’s their one and only day by the sea during the summer months and with invaluable support from our sponsors, the council is delighted to be organising this special event for the city’s senior residents as it heads into a fifth decade.”

Tickets are on sale until 4 July at cambridgelivetickets.co.uk, the Wheeler Street ticket office and community centres.
