Impington-based children’s author Lou Carter is to have one of her children’s books read out on Cbeebies Bedtime Stories this evening (Friday, January 14), joining the ranks of classic children’s tales that have been read out, such as Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are and The BFG by Roald Dahl.

Lou’s bestselling children’s book, There is No Dragon in this Story, will be read out at 6.50pm on the CBeebies channel by television presenter and Invictus Games medalist J J Chalmers.

The news that her book had been chosen came as a shock to Lou, a former primary school teacher who is now a bootcamp instructor for Bootcamp Warriors and also at Fortitude Fitness Centre - as well as running mobility classes at Abbeyfield, Girton Green and working as a mobile PT in the local area.

She tells the Cambridge Independent that she was “so excited”, adding: “They only told me on Monday so I didn’t know anything about it.” The BBC informed Lou’s publisher who then passed on the good news to her. “I’ve no idea what the process is - it was all a big surprise,” she admits.

There is No Dragon in this Story, Lou’s first book, was published in 2017. A major success, it has sold 47,000 copies worldwide. “It did really well,” says Lou, “it just seemed to hit the right note and it got sold in 23 languages - which was a record for Bloomsbury.

“It just skyrocketed and now it’s become the first in a series. There is No Big Bad Wolf in this Story came out last year, and then there are two more coming over the next couple of years. No one really knows why but I think because it’s got lots of different fairytale characters in and it just seemed to be really popular all over the world, which was so amazing. And it was my first book as well so was not expecting it at all.”

To date, Lou has had six books published with both Hachette and Bloomsbury with two more on the way this year. Then there are another six, she says, “that are all in various stages of being illustrated."

There is No Dragon in this Story, read by J J Chalmers, will be on at 6.50pm this evening (Friday, January 14) on Cbeebies.
