David Hockney exhibition opens at MODO, Cambridge’s newest art gallery
MODO Gallery, a contemporary space that recently opened in Cambridge city centre, has dedicated its three floors to the work of one of Britain’s best-known living artists, David Hockney.
‘Hockney’s Spirit of Innovation’ brings together a wide range of works by the artist. Visitors will encounter originals, iPad drawings, computer drawings, photography, and even an augmented reality experience – all celebrating Hockney’s experimentation.
With more than 50 pieces on view, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the breadth of Hockney’s creative evolution, from early works to more recent digital images.
This new exhibition comes as Paris’s Foundation Louis Vuitton hosts a career-spanning Hockney retrospective.
Sally Clark, curator at MODO, says: “This show is about possibility – how an artist never stops looking, never stops asking what else an image can be.
“Hockney’s work is fearless in its joy, its curiosity, its refusal to stand still. That’s exactly the spirit we wanted to bring to MODO’s launch.”
She adds: “We believe in art that opens doors – not just to ideas, but to new audiences.
“Cambridge deserves to be on the map for major cultural experiences, and this exhibition is our way of saying: art belongs here, and it belongs to everyone.”
David Hockney, born in Bradford in 1937, is one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
A leading figure in the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, Hockney is renowned for his bold use of colour, experimentation with perspective, and for embracing new technologies. He continues to innovate well into his 80s.
The exhibition is on now at the MODO Gallery, 62 Sidney Street, Cambridge. It runs until 25 July. Entry is free and more information, including events, is available at modoart.co.uk. Also look out on Eventbrite as new events are posted weekly.
