Dishoom Permit Room bar-café opens in Cambridge

The new Dishoom Permit Room Indian all-day bar-café has opened on Trinity Street in Cambridge.

A launch party was held last Wednesday (19 June), ahead of its officially opening a day later.

Inspired by the permit rooms of 1960s and 1970s Bombay, Dishoom opened its first Permit Room in Brighton in November last year. Another branch is due to open in Oxford later this year.

Dishoom, a Bombay-inspired restaurant group with locations throughout the UK, was founded by cousins Shamil and Kavi Thakrar in 2010, along with Amar and Adarsh Radia, who both left the business in 2017.

Kavi said: “The Permit Rooms are really celebrating the permit rooms of Bombay, which were all about the drinking and the wonderful feeling that accompanies that.

“I think what we’re really pleased to see in Brighton is that people are starting to use the Permit Room as part of their daily and weekly lives.

“They might pop in for a cup of chai in the morning, or breakfast before work, or late-night drinking – which is what these places are all about...

“So what we love about the Permit Room is that people are using it all day. It’s very low-key and laidback.”
