Galeria Moderna brings its autumn exhibition to Grand Arcade, Cambridge
Galeria Moderna’s autumn exhibition is on now and runs until Sunday, 24 November, on the first floor of the Grand Arcade shopping centre in central Cambridge.
The exhibition includes a varied collection of paintings, sculptures, and mixed media from award-winning artists.
In addition to these acclaimed works, visitors will have the opportunity to view pieces by special guest artists, including notable local talent.
Artists showcased within the exhibition include Susan Law, a local artist and winner of the 2023 Cambridge Invitational and Mayor’s Choice Award.
She said: “At the end of 2023 I was very pleased to be chosen as one of the prize-winners for the Galleria Moderna Cambridge Invitational Art Contest – and winning the Mayor’s Prize at the exhibition opening evening was an amazing surprise.
“I have lived in and around Cambridge for most of my life. I used to run a restaurant in the centre of Cambridge and when I decided to sell it and quit the catering industry, I resolved to develop my interest in art.
“This led me to a BA at Winchester School of Art and an MA at Norwich University of the Arts. Coming back home I set up my own art studio.
“I have a fascination for the process of making an artwork from the initial exploration and experimentation through to the final finishing of a piece.
“I especially enjoy making bronzes, using methods that have remained unchanged for thousands of years.
“My recent series of sculptures on the theme of climate change have developed from my apprehension for our future in a world of constant changes.
“Working with Galeria Moderna has been an exciting experience. Having such a passionate gallery showcasing my work is a tremendous boost to my confidence as an artist.
“I feel honoured for my work to be part of their exhibitions.”
Italian-born portrait artist Giulia Quaresima is another artist whose work is to be featured.
Giulia is a member of the Cambridge Drawing Society and an associate member of the London’s Society of Graphic Fine Art.
She was also a contestant on this year’s Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year, drawing a portrait of TV star and comedian Rosie Jones.
Since winning the Cambridge Open Art Invitational in 2022, portrait artist Lisa Zaman has had the opportunity to exhibit her work in New York and London – and she will be returning to Galeria Moderna for the third time for the autumn exhibition.
Visitors can get a chance to meet Lisa and see her in action as she undertakes a live drawing session on the first weekend at Galeria Moderna, on Saturday, 16 November.
Each work on display at the exhibition is available for purchase, with complimentary local delivery.
Photomontage artist J Leone is the curator of Galeria Moderna and its autumn exhibition. He said of his work curating exhibitions: “It’s about creating an art movement that welcomes everyone, no matter their level.
“I know first-hand how tough it can be starting out. By advising as best I can and curating these exhibitions, I’m helping to build a platform that supports artists’ growth and exposure.
“It’s vital that contests and exhibitions are accessible and driven by a love of art – not just competition. Seeing artists develop and find their voice is the most fulfilling part of this journey.”
