Starting tomorrow (Saturday, November 11) and running until December 23, art enthusiasts and curious shoppers can witness the ensemble of artworks on level one of the Cambridge shopping centre.

The event promises to be more than just an art show, as renowned guest artists demonstrate their crafts live during the exhibition.

And as December nights get colder, the heat turns up at Galeria Moderna with the grand finale showcasing the winning artists of the fourth Cambridge Invitational Art Contest.

Aspiring artists should note that entries for the contest are now open, offering a chance for national media spotlight and a place in the Christmas exhibition.

Galeria Moderna has also introduced new patrons to its award and judging system. In collaboration with the Cambridge Independent, a standout artist will be presented with the inaugural Cambridge Independent Art Award. Each artist must submit two works of art that best represent themselves as an artist.

The contest is open to all artists, there is no theme to the contest and all mediums of art including photography can be entered. Performance and video art are the only mediums excluded.

Twelve artists will be selected and with a rotation of judges, previous award-winners and applicants have a fresh opportunity each year.

The special guest judge for the fourth Cambridge Invitational is John Doubleday, and £2 from every entry will be donated to Arts and Minds, a charity which provides a broad range of arts-based programmes designed to support the positive mental health of communities across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

In addition, the artworks sales commission of 20 per cent will also be donated to the charity.

Barry Thornton, owner of Galeria Moderna, said: “Our art contests at Galeria Moderna have evolved and improved year by year, empowering our winning artists and in many cases propelling their careers.

“We are dedicated to ongoing support and showcasing talent in our seasonal gallery.”
