In pictures: Adventures in nature – and family days out – over the Easter holidays

There has been a spring in the step of youngsters during the Easter holidays, as visitor attractions put on a raft of events – and there is still time to enjoy some of them.

The magic of Easter egg trails has drawn families to National Trust properties around the region. From creating wild art to waddling like a duckling, the trails have been designed to stimulate the senses and immerse children in the natural world. And of course, no such adventure would be complete without a chocolate egg at the end.

The trails at Wicken Fen, Anglesey Abbey and the Wimpole Estate all run until Tuesday, April 18, and are charged at normal admission fees plus £3 per trail, which includes the chocolate egg. The trust says its eggs are made in the UK using cocoa responsibly sourced from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms.

The Easter adventure in nature trail at Wicken Fen includes hunting for minibeasts and spotting giant butterflies. Visitors can pick up a trail pack at the visitor centre and follow the 1.5-mile pushchair-friendly route.

The trail at Anglesey Abbey requires pre-booking. Visitors can explore wildlife across the gardens and Hoe Fen wildlife discovery area, which is home to all manner of creatures from birds to butterflies to insects and bugs. Pick up your trail pack and head out to complete 10 nature-inspired activities along the way.

At the Wimpole Estate, the nature trail is set within 2,500 acres of countryside and families can enjoy spotting 85 different varieties of daffodils, as well as watching the newborn lambs from Wimpole Home Farm.

The formal gardens include a walled garden with flower borders and orchard that is home to 300 blossoming fruit trees. For more on the trails, visit nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/whats-on/easter-egg-hunts.

Meanwhile, Denny Abbey and the Farmland Museum, the popular English Heritage site in Waterbeach, held an Easter family fun day on Bank Holiday Monday (April 10). Sarah Michael, museum manager, noted that they still had a good turnout and a good day, despite the “absolutely awful” weather that struck in the morning.

She said: “We’ve had kids activities for the whole of the school holidays. On Monday, we had live music from Burwell Folk and then we had a performance of Heroes and Villains of the Fens from a group called History Needs You.

“We had all our traditional garden games out as well, so it gives a bit of a traditional village fair feel – they’re always hugely popular.”

Sarah said the museum held a Victorian trail this year – rather than a traditional egg hunt – in which people had to find Victorian Easter cards. She added: “We are still open for the rest of the Easter holidays and we’ve still got a trail and children’s craft activities running on Thursday and Friday this week.”
