In pictures: Arbury Carnival is a riot of colour and fun

There was another good turnout at this year’s Arbury Carnival, which featured the theme witches, wizards and mythical creatures.

Incredibly, it was organised by just three people. Among them was Marina Bush, who has been on the organising committee for five years but has been involved for longer as a performer.

“Myself and another committee member, Sue Baker, are bellydancers!” she revealed. More committee members are needed, she noted, to help keep the event going.

Marina and Sue are stepping down after this year and if new committee members cannot be found, the future of the event will be in doubt. The organisers’ council funding was also cut this year, making things more challenging.

But the committee was delighted to be supported by a “really good group of volunteers, largely down to the efforts of North Cambridge Churches”.

Among the new attractions this year were a mobile bar and a pizza truck called La Bigger Pizzeria. And, as ever, the parade was full of colour.

“We had a couple of great floats with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by one of the school groups. We had participation in the procession from local primary schools and Castle School,” said Marina, who was born in Tennessee and moved to the UK as a child.

The choir from Castle School sang for all the attendees for the first time. Marina believes the heat on Saturday may have dissuaded a few from attending. She said: “It was still a really good turnout – about 3,000, I guess – but it’s certainly been busier before.”
