Cambridge Chinese Community Centre hosted the fifth Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday (8 June) at Jesus Green and the River Cam.
This free traditional dragon boat race, which was staged for the first time in 1996, included a culinary and cultural heritage fair along with multicultural performances, and a family and children’s zone.
Dr Wei Sun, chairman of Cambridge Chinese Community Centre, said the festival was “brilliant”, adding: “A lot of people turned up; this was the fifth event and it was the best one.”
Wei Sun explained why the festival, which included 12 teams taking part, with the winner being a team from the Guangdong province in China, has only been held occasionally since 1996 – with previous iterations in 2000, 2017 and 2018.
“It’s not very easy to run it,” said Wei Sun. “It needs a lot of preparation and financial support. But we like to do it anyway.
“Normally we join many Chinese organisations together to hold it.”
This year’s event, which was attended by the new mayor of Cambridge, Cllr Dinah Pounds, incorporated representatives from different communities.
