Full of waterside fun, explosive fireworks and well-dressed students, it had to be the First and Third Trinity Boat Club May Ball – the Trinity May Ball for short – which was held last Monday (June 20).

Claudia Feng, speaking on behalf of the Trinity May Ball Committee, said: “We were delighted to welcome guests to the Trinity May Ball this year and thrilled that everyone enjoyed the occasion, particularly post-pandemic.
“Among the many attractions this year – the 156th First and Third May Ball – were fairground rides, an Abba tribute band and tagliatelle served in a giant wheel of cheese. The May Ball Committee, which worked tirelessly throughout the year, would like to thank everyone for making the 2022 May Ball such a lovely occasion.”

With a history that stretches back more than a century, the first official May Ball was held in 1866 to celebrate a successful May Bumps, with the First Trinity Boat Club at the head of the river and Third Trinity a close second.

The event has evolved from a celebration attended by just 30 Trinitarians into a grand spectacle attended by some 2,000-plus guests.
Previous Trinity May Balls have witnessed performances from the likes of Kilburn and the High Roads (Ian Dury’s pre-Blockheads band), Shakin’ Stevens, Elvis Costello, and The Bootleg Beatles.
