The Flaming June Half Marathon and 10k – “a unique and friendly multi-terrain run, based around Histon” – took place on Sunday (8 June).

Organised by the charity HI Friends with support from local running club HI Runners, the Flaming June runs provide, say the organisers, something a little different from the usual road-based courses.

HI Friends organises various community sporting events, and the Flaming June has been enjoyed by many since it began in 2014.

This year’s half marathon featured 204 runners, while 266 people ran the 10k.

The winner of the half marathon was Sam Stratford, with Margherita Zanini the first female runner back, while the 10k was won by Terry Fawden, with Emily Grapes being the first woman to cross the finishing line.

The second and third-placed men in the half marathon were Fredrick Krylander and Tom Barnes, while Meghan McGrath and Amy Shearer came second and third amongst the female runners.

Seventy volunteers helped on the day and a dry but windy morning greeted the runners. The new half marathon course, taking in Cottenham, proved popular.

Neil Davies, one of the organisers, explained: “We had to change due to the closure of the guided busway bridleway.”

The event raised £4,500, which will help fund the HI Friends wellbeing team which supports elderly people, those living with memory loss, and mental wellbeing for all ages.

“We were really pleased how the event went with good runner numbers and positive reactions to the new race routes,” added Neil.
