In pictures: Sun shines for 2025 Sawston Fun Run

The sun was shining, the crowds were plentiful and the costumes were as imaginative as ever as participants tackled the 39th Sawston Fun Run & Walk on Sunday (11 May).

The largest community event in the area, the fun run has a long history of bringing the community together and raising money for charity.

Jerry Holloway, the event’s coordinator, who started it back in 1986, said: “We’re very pleased with this year’s fun run – it attracted 1,752 entries, which is the highest since we started the event in 1986.

“We still had lots of people signing up on the day; it was glorious weather, lots of people dressed up in fancy dress...

“We made sure there was plenty of water en route so that they didn’t get too dehydrated.

“Everybody seemed to have a really good time, we’ve had very positive feedback on Facebook and word-of-mouth from people, so we’re very pleased with the way it went.”

Jerry reveals that since 1986, the Sawston Fun Run has raised about £570,000.

He said: “Cambridge Sawston Rotary are responsible for organising the event; I am what they call an honorary Rotarian, but it falls under their auspices to organise the event.

“And what we decided this year, as last year, was that we would try and raise money for as many local charities as possible, rather than going for one or two big, well-known charities.

“So there are 24 charities again this year, and they’re all associated with young people, voluntary groups, the elderly, the vulnerable, and that’s the way we plan the event.

“It’s a fun event and we want to make sure that all of these community organisations actually benefit from it.”

The event itself starts and finishes within the grounds of Sawston Village College, which is the hub of the event management, with many volunteers helping with runner registrations and finish line activities to ensure all participants come back safely and receive their awards.

There were two races on the day: a competitive course of 7.4km (4.6 miles) and a shorter route of 3.8km (2.4 miles) for the fun-runners and walkers.

Trophies were awarded for the first three home in all categories and all participants received a medal and goody bag.

The overall winners of the long race were Edward Moffett for the men, with a time of 24 minutes, 54 seconds, and Zoe Macdonald for the women, with a time of 28 minutes, 22 seconds.

For the women and girls’ individual race categories, trophies were awarded to Sae Kawai, Kerry Kitchener, Amelia Crawford, Maddie Legg and Lily Florey.

Trophies for the men and boys were awarded to Sullivan Smith, Daniel Aguilar-Agon, Harvey Elgar, Hari Jugdaohsingh and Luke Moulds.
