IWM Duxford cancels Battle of Britain Proms and Air Show due to coronavirus

The Imperial War Museum at Duxford has cancelled its Battle of Britain Proms and Air Show 2020, which had been due to take place from September 18-20.

The museum said it was “devastated” to make the decision, but did so for the safety of visitors and staff amid rising cases of the coronavirus.

It follows new government restrictions that come into force from Monday that mean groups of more than six people cannot gather socially. The government also halved capacity at sporting events to 1,000 people.

A statement from IWM Duxford read: “It is with great sadness that I have to let you know that the decision has been taken to cancel the Duxford Battle of Britain Proms and 80th Anniversary Battle of Britain Air Show 2020.

“I know you were looking forward to what was set to be a brilliant weekend, but we must prioritise the safety of visitors, staff and the local community in this rapidly changing climate.

“We are devastated to have to take this decision and want to thank you for showing your support to us, it is extremely valued and this was not a decision that was taken lightly.

“We promise to return with a packed programme for our next Air Show season and very much look forward to seeing you there!

“We apologise for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause.”

A study released today shows the coronavirus infection rate is doubling every seven to eight days.
