Plough Monday in Balsham raises £3,000 for good causes
The historic Balsham Plough Monday is thought to have raised about £3,000 this week.
A team of more than 20 ploughmen took to the streets with their plough – pulled by six to eight of them – from 5pm, starting off at Samworth Close and taking in numerous stops before ending at The Bell and the Black Bull pubs.
Plough Monday began in the 16th century, when farm workers would collect donations after their unpaid Christmas lay-off had ended.
The modern version raises money for good causes, which will be selected in February.
One of the organisers, Terry O’Neill, said: “We had a good night and the Cambridge Morris Men did dances at stops.”
