Review: Honest Burgers’ new Caribbean fried chicken burger

Honest Burgers, whose Cambridge branch is located on Corn Exchange Street, next to the Cambridge Corn Exchange, is offering a new Caribbean fried chicken burger, inspired by the Caribbean island of Grenada.

This special for the month of June is a cultural collaboration with Pure Grenada, the official tourism board for the island.

This special came to fruition after Pure Grenada invited Honest Burgers to the Isle of Spice to gain inspiration for its summer special. Although one of the smaller islands in the Caribbean, Grenada is known for its spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and turmeric, and is a producer of high-calibre rums.

The new culinary offering – which is available until July 3 – is a buttermilk fried burger. The chicken is covered in barbecue sauce mixed with spicy yellow scotch bonnet pepper sauce, as well as an aromatic garlic and herb mayonnaise filled with a mixture of Grenadian herbs.

The fried chicken sits on a bed of Honest Burgers’ ‘spice isle’ coleslaw, made up of white cabbage and buttermilk spiced with Grenada’s famous blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, and turmeric.

The verdict:

I went along to try this new burger on Thursday, June 15. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’m not normally a fan of bonnet peppers, but here in sauce form it really works, adding a pleasant ‘kick’ to the more familiar-tasting barbecue sauce and garlic and herb mayonaise.

The blend of spices also ensures an exotic eating experience, somewhat removed from the standard options on the Honest Burgers menu. I’m a sucker for dishes that require a wide variety of ingredients – ‘more is more’ for me, when it comes to food – and anyone who feels the way I do won’t be disappointed by this burger.

To accompany it, I would recommend the rosemary chips and the Eton Mess milkshake – the first time I’d ever had this classic English pudding in drink form.

Commenting on his trip to the Grenada, Adam Layton, Honest Burgers’ head of food, said: “I had a great time eating, drinking, and dancing around Grenada.

“The locals are very friendly, and the foods are varied and delicious. So many treats to be had – if I had to recommend something it would be the crab backs at BB’s.

“I have a renewed faith in rum, which was an everyday ritual. We also picked up some of the local soca and jab jab carnival tunes so expect to hear them on rotation for the month across our restaurants.”

The Caribbean fried chicken burger will be available at all 43 Honest Burgers restaurants until July 3, priced at £14.50, and served with homemade rosemary salted chips for dine-ins and collection, or £15.50 with a side when ordered via Uber Eats.
