Seann Walsh, Trevor Nelson, and the Amy Winehouse Band set to appear at this year’s Shelford Feast
The annual Shelford Feast – a week of music, comedy, food and drink in Great Shelford – starts this Saturday (July 1).
The many events include a beer festival, a performance by Judge Jules and Orchestra and a concert showcasing the work of Ivor Novello (July 1), a feast day (July 2), a dance night (July 3), a performance by Sawston Youth Drama, a comedy night (July 5) – headlined by Seann Walsh – a quiz night (July 6), the Amy Winehouse Band (July 7), and a Trevor Nelson DJ set and jazz band the Mark Crooks Quintet (July 8).
The Shelford Feast goes back to medieval times when it was more likely to have been a festival celebrated around a special day in the calendar.
Prior to the Second World War, the feast was held on the sports ground where Leeway Avenue is now, moving to the land behind the former De Freville Arms in the 1930s.
The last of the pre-war feasts was held in 1938 after which it ceased to be held until it was revived in 1994. Today, the Shelford Feast is celebrated on a Sunday in early July on the Recreation Ground in the centre of the village.
