Discover the hidden treasures of the Fitzwilliam museum thanks to a new app

Cambridge is one of 12 historic cities that have collaborated on an innovative augmented reality (AR) product that is set to bring heritage to life for a younger audience.

The recently launched experience consists of an app and videos that transport the user back in time to unveil the hidden lives of some of history’s most fascinating characters at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

The premise of the free app is to capture significant historic moments in time while providing visitors with the opportunity to explore England’s most historic cities. It uses cutting-edge technology to give historical moments a fresh perspective.

It is set to transform the Fitzwilliam Museum’s appeal by introducing a new, more technologically-motivated and younger audience.

Kate Carreno, of the Fitzwilliam Museum and board member of Visit Cambridge, said: “The app will tell you how a circus strongman enabled the sarcophagus lid of the pharaoh Ramasses III to travel from Egypt to England and encourage visitors to spot the difference in 17th-century Venice.”
