Here be dragons: Evidence is uncovered by Year 2 sleuths at Sancton Wood School

It seems there may be a dragon – or even dragons – on the loose in or around Sancton Wood School, and Year 2 pupils have been collecting and analysing the evidence.

The very excited youngsters wanted to share all their evidence with a journalist and a photographer – and the Cambridge Independent was happy to oblige, paying the Cambridge school a visit, though not without trepidation, last Thursday (March 16).

By listening to what the class had to say, we were able to ascertain that the dragon, or one of the dragons, was dark purple or black, and that there was also a blue and purple dragon around the vicinity ominously named ‘Skull Crusher’.

The main piece of evidence was a video that had been made of what appeared to be a very scary, fire-breathing dragon landing in front of the school in St Paul’s Road. We were shown what appeared to be scorch marks near the main building, as well as scratch marks and cracks in the road.

Some of the children had found pieces of what seemed to be a meteorite in the playground, suggesting that the dragon – or dragons – may have come from another planet.

The children had also noticed that the weather seemed to change whenever a dragon was around, and revealed that they had reported all of their findings and observations to a police officer the day before – reporting that a force helicopter was out searching for the dragon or dragons.

Class teacher Ellie Herbert, who revealed on Monday that more evidence had come to light over the weekend, said: “The dragon is still at large. People must be vigilant and be prepared to run and hide.”

Chloe, one of the pupils in the class, told us: “On Saturday I saw that the Corpus Christi clock is covered in big cracks and is smashed. It must be the dragon.”

Classmate Amala noted: “On Monday, Miss Hodges came in when we were minding our own business and told us that she had seen a real fire-breathing dragon. I did not believe her, but she had convincing video evidence.”

Anushka added: “I, Olivia and Chloe found some mysterious meteor pieces in the playground.” And Rey said: “The day Miss Hodges came in to tell us about the dragon, during break-time Mrs Herbert told us to be alert and on guard duty and myself, Anders and George saw a little flash of the dragon.

“I only saw a little glimpse of its wings; however, its wings had some small black scales. I was terrified”. Stephen was affected too, saying: “I was scared when I first saw the video evidence.” And Hazel observed: “We found overwhelming evidence outside the school for the dragon” .

Yixuan explained: “I found some gloopy, blue marks on our window and some cracks. Anders thought this must be the dragon Skull Crusher.”

Anders said: “My dad is a policeman, and he came in and we told him all about the evidence we had and showed him the video. He told the police helicopters to keep an eye out. He also told his boss.”

Jamie said: “It was an exciting nerve-racking week in Year 2.” And Olivia revealed: “I saw a giant footprint in Parker’s Piece – it must have been from the dragon.”

Amala had this message for members of the public: “If anyone sees anything that might be from a dragon, please contact Year 2 at Sancton Wood School. Or run and hide if it is trying to attack you. If anything else unusual happens, please go and hide.”

Ellie added: “Our topic in English is to write fantasy stories. This ‘hook’ has been a fantastic way to inspire the children and get their creative juices flowing. We have created our own dragons and worlds the children think the dragons might have come from. We have been trying to use lots of descriptive language.”
